IBJJF graduation system
At Checkmat Lake Zurich Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we follow the IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) graduation guidelines to ensure a fair, consistent, and proven path of advancement for all students.
The IBJJF grading system is recognized worldwide and provides clear milestones that reward dedication, technical development, mat time, and commitment to the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This structured approach helps students stay motivated, track their progress, and celebrate achievements throughout their journey.
Promotions are earned through consistent training, demonstrated skill, positive attitude, and adherence to the values of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Whether you are a beginner taking your first class or an experienced practitioner pursuing higher ranks, our goal is to support your growth every step of the way.

KIDS GRADUATION SYSTEM
IBJJF suggests three types of graduation system based on Degrees and stripes for Kids.
At Checkmat Lake Zurich Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we follow the monthly system
MONTHLY SYSTEM For the academies that adopt the degree graduation every month, the IBJJF suggests 11 degrees for each belt. The 12th degree will be graduating the athlete to the next belt color. The first four degrees are white, the next four will be red and the last three will be the color of the next belt, as shown on the image below.
ADULT GRADUATION SYSTEM
Athletes aged 16 years and older (from Juvenile 1 and up):
White Belt, Blue Belt, Purple Belt, Brown Belt: these are divided into single color belts and by 4 degrees.
BlackBelt: single color belt and divided by six (6) Degrees. Red and BlackBelt: represents the Seventh Degree Black Belt. Red and WhiteBelt: represents the Eighth Degree Black Belt. Red Belt: represents the Ninth Degree Black Belt.
